In this method, we are using the free version of the plugin Advanced Coupons for WooCommerce. It is one of the best-known plugins on the market. You can also use the premium ones according to your wish. Here are the steps:

  • After activation, navigate to the Marketing >> Coupons page of the dashboard. Click on the “Add Coupon” button to create a new coupon.    
  • Now, you need to type the coupon code at the top of the screen which you want to use. Also, you can click on the “Generate coupon code” button in order to automatically generate the code.
  • It is better to add a description of the purpose of the code so that you don’t forget it.
  • Hence, decide the coupon type and choose the discount type, or the amount that you are offering. You will also see the options of the free friendship and coupon expiry date as well. After selection, you need to lace the limitations which are further described in the steps below:

1. Creating a Single-Use Coupon

This method is considered the best method to limit coupon use. On the same page of the “Add new coupon“, you will find the “Coupon data” section. Carry on and click on the “Usage limits” tab.

Now, you need to enter the number you want the customer to use the coupon in the “Usage limit per user” field. Like, we are entering 1. For instance, this ensures that each customer can use the coupon only one time. 

Alternatively, you can also enter the number in the field “Usage limit per coupon“. Doing so will allow all your customer to use the coupon only once. 

Apart from this, you can also enter the numbers in both fields. Say, we entered 10 in the “Usage limit per coupon” and 1 in the “Usage coupon per user” field. This allows the first ten customers to use the coupon only a single time. 

2. Creating a Personalized Coupon

If you are looking for a way to create a personalized coupon this is the method for you. This coupon is only available to certain customers. Again, you should be on the same page where you will find the “Coupon data” section. Here you need to click on the “Usage restriction” tab and scroll down to the “Allowed emails” field.

You can enlist the email address of a single customer or multiple ones by separating them with commas. Additionally, only the customer whose email address is mentioned here is allowed to use the coupon. 

Moreover, there is also a system to make the coupon available to all the customers. You just need to add * at the Allowed email box and the user you are willing to use this coupon has to match the Gmail address. However, doing so allows the customer to use the coupon more than once. In order to make it a limited one, you need to combine methods 1 and 2. At first, follow method 1 and then this method.

3. Creating a Role-Restricted Coupon

With the help of this method, you can restrict the user who can utilize the coupon who has a certain WordPress user role. This method can be used as an alternative to method 2.

On the same page of the “Add new coupon” there is a “Role Restrictions” tab. You need to click on the tab and then check the box to enable the role restrictions.

A popup having list of roles will appear where you need to select more than one user role. 

Make sure you customize the “Invalid role error message” to message the other user who can’t access the coupon. Apart from this, membership sites can also use this method to create members-only coupons. 

Publishing the One-Time Personalized Coupon 

You can use any methods mentioned above. After finishing the setup of the coupon, you just need to click on the “Publish” button which is located at the top right of the page.
